An art quilt is defined as a contemporary artwork in fibre, textile and thread, exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts: painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, assemblage and sculpture.
The art quilt is evolving, moving away from its original point of reference – the quilt as bed cover – to claim its place as modern art on the walls of galleries, museums and public buildings.
The field of textile art has grown exponentially worldwide. Each country has its unique style and characteristic. As with all good art, the work is original. The pieces have the ability to communicate an idea, emotion or message. They have a quality of mystery and transcend the literal.
The artists explore radically different subjects and contexts, materials and methods, using fabric, fibre and mixed media as a means of expression.
Stitching, by hand or machine, diverges from the strictly functional role and becomes an expressive painterly tool in its own right.
The vision is to establish place for art quilts in the fine art world.
Educate the public about art quilts.
Promote quilts to major art publications, museums and galleries.
Act as a resource for curators, consultants, teachers, students and collectors.
