Dear Eve, We’re Not There Yet. And Yet. explores the complexities and contradictions of womanhood. Consisting of multiple hand-embroidered blocks, the work reflects on the joys, burdens, and expectations that accompany being a woman.

Step back from the work, and the word “YET” begins to emerge, holding the tensions inherent in women’s lived experiences. We are not yet equal, and yet we continue to fight for equality. Yet another femicide. And yet we dance. Yet another injustice. And yet we resist, rebuild, persist.

Addressed to Eve, the work takes the form of a letter to the metaphorical first woman, offering a glimpse into the world that followed her. It asks what she would make of the progress we celebrate, the violence we continue to witness, and the contradictions we carry. Much has changed. And yet.

In relation to the exhibition’s theme, the work considers womanhood as something constantly in flux; a two-steps-forward, one-step-back experience in the modern world. It reflects a state of continual transition, expansion and evolution, where progress and regression can exist simultaneously.
