In radical surrender the soul becomes a universe; filled with the infinite potential of chaos and creation is a three-dimensional, fibre-based mixed media installation that represents the relinquishing of negativity such as deep-seated anger, persistent fear and resentment; allowing stagnant spiritual energy to dissipate. A metaphorical fire of free-form machine embroidery purges the blue, knitted soul in a chicken wire cauldron. Traditionally fibre-based creativity is women’s work; regarded as craft not art, because it is categorised as a domestic feminine pursuit to produce functional objects that cannot be viewed in a purely aesthetic way and has, for centuries, not been taken seriously in the male dominated art world. It is therefore not surprising that fibre art is embraced as the art of protest in feminism.
