Khudu: Tortoise Group Exhibition
Tortoises are intriguing animals known for their patience, longevity, perseverance and wisdom. They are associated with being slow. One feature of the tortoise that is mostly striking is their shell, which serves as some form of protective gear. It's like a home for the tortoise. With that said, the concept of the exhibition draws inspiration from the Sepedi idiom "Khudu ga e lahle legapi la yona", which loosely translates to "a tortoise never loses its shell". This is the equivalent of the saying "a leopard never loses its spots", meaning old habits die hard. Every single one of us has old habits or beliefs that we want to hold onto, never wanting to let go of them. Another attribute is that the tortoise uses it's shell as some kind of shelter and this can be perceived as either a home or a prison if looked at in terms of the concept of the comfort zone. The curators of this exhibition ask of the artists to constantly break out of their shells, to keep reinventing themselves.
