The Art of Living Shapes
A living shape refers to the idea that our lives, much like a sculpture, are continually molded by our experiences. This concept invites us to embrace the journey of life and find beauty in its ever-changing form.
We are constantly surrounded by both geometrical and natural forms. Geometrical forms are typically linked to man-made objects, constructed with intention and precision, while natural forms are imperfect, free-flowing, and often described as organic. These forms, whether precise or organic, collectively inform the way artists interpret and express their experiences. The variety of shapes becomes the alphabet of a visual language, which artists refine into their own personal style. Even something as subtle as the shape of a brush stroke can serve as a metaphor for emotions or states of being. For instance, a bold, sweeping brush stroke might convey energy and movement, suggesting excitement or action, while a delicate, horizontal line can evoke calmness and stability, bringing a sense of tranquility to the artwork. In this way, brush strokes not only indicate movement or stability but can also move objects from sharp clarity into a soft, faded background, further enhancing the emotional impact of the piece.
As a result, every work of art becomes a living shape—one that celebrates an aspect of the ever-changing cycle of life, capturing both the artist’s intent and the evolving nature of existence itself.
