Christelle Swart: Artist Biography
Christelle Swart (b. 1966, Pretoria, South Africa) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans decorative painting techniques, functional art and décor, large-scale sculpture, and contemporary fine art. With a career rooted in technical mastery and material experimentation, she is known for her immersive, holistic approach that transforms traditional methods and everyday objects into expressive, purposeful works.
After matriculating in 1984, Swart studied Fine Arts at the University of Pretoria and the Pretoria Technikon. In 1991 she launched her professional career in commercial painting techniques, a practice she sustained until 2016. Between 1993 and 1999 she specialised in advanced painting methods and cement-carved embossing, while also tutoring in these disciplines. During this period her work attracted national attention, with features in leading South African magazines including De Kat, Habitat, Garden and Home, and Die Beeld. Commissions took her across South Africa as well as to Namibia, the United States, and Australia.
Guided by her personal motto—“You DO NOT have to be an artist to create ART. It’s the will to get the materials together and the curiosity to try them out” (1993)—Swart approaches every project with total immersion. She employs a holistic-integrated methodology, ensuring that every element contributes to the equilibrium of the finished artwork.
In 2017 she broadened her technical repertoire by incorporating woodcraft. This shift redirected her focus toward the design and creation of functional art and bespoke décor. Working primarily with wood and resin, she reinterpreted traditional paint recipes and techniques into her own distinctive style, producing exclusive ranges that blurred the boundaries between fine art and functional object.
Notable achievements from 2017 to 2020 include the conceptual design of a heritage piece for her former high school, Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool, and the creation of an heirloom table and server executed in wood, resin, and steel.
In 2022 Swart’s passion for contemporary fine art re-emerged. She began exploring geometric themes through large-scale sculptures, favouring mediums such as wood, metal, and clay. By 2024 she had further expanded her practice to include leathercraft, jewelry making, and the transformation of found or recycled objects—turning pollution and discarded materials into purposeful art.
Having recently established her studio in Cullinan, Christelle Swart is now nearing the close of her commercial career. Her focus has shifted entirely to authentic fine-art creation, where she continues to innovate across disciplines with the same curiosity and material intelligence that have defined her work for more than three decades.
