Artist’s Statement: Ground Control to Major Tom
Christelle Swart, 2026  

“Ground Control to Major Tom” – the opening line of David Bowie’s Space Oddity – instantly comes to mind when I think of the Starman.  This miniature bust is my personal tribute to Bowie, whose music and fearless creativity have inspired me for over four decades. Through the sculpted form, I sought to capture his unmistakable silhouette and the sense of otherworldly solitude and boundless imagination that defined his work.  In my signature multidisciplinary style, the piece fuses traditional sculptural techniques with contemporary materials, reflecting my belief that art is born from curiosity and the courage to bring materials together.  – Christelle Swart
