Ziphelele Mqwala - Escaping

My work explores the persona in a body dysmorphic perspective within the fashion trends of today, in which today’s most influential trending style is Bagginess. I use folds as a form to depict or incorporate that in my pieces. As it has a huge impact towards one’s confidence about themselves. I use the technique of fabric dipping into clay slip. Using different types of fabric which creates cracks when more slip is applied upon on its drying process. The cracks are a metaphoric expression of imperfections of my body. The execution of artworks is inspired by Jackson Shaner and Nandipha Mntambo. Tight and fitted clothing exposes your sexuality and physical features, making you feel vulnerable. The world or internet has projected the sense of wearing puffed out clothing as “drip”(cool and fashionable). As it is a way of escaping the real you and to boost your confidence within todays fashion trends
