With Sculptural Portraiture, in addition to accuracy of features and form rendering, I strive to capture, and portray the Soul or Essence of my subject. This is enormously relevant in my Portraiture as I believe the work should not only show a likeness, but also portray an energy, a presence- to elicit an emotion or feeling from the viewer.

I study my subject matter, not only on physical appearance, but Historical relevance, personality etc.

As an example, I listened to Giuseppe Verdi’s music constantly for weeks while conceptualising and sculpting the commission of his bust. This helped to create a portrait that I felt to be authentic.

For me, my most meaningful of Portraits was of Madiba. I feel I have shown his wisdom, kindness and love, but also with an undertone of his strong will.
