Bio:

After years in academia Juanita Bezuidenhout relocated to Klerksdorp, practicing histopathology, while metamorphosing into a textile artist and photographer. She obtained her MBChB from Pretoria, and her MMed and PhD from Stellenbosch University. She expressed her creativity through inventive cooking, creating wedding dresses, other wearable art and mosaics. A 3D academic poster installation, demonstrating the tensions during a major surgical procedure, won second place at an international conference, and a textile creation of a tree was partly instrumental in her obtaining a diploma in Integral Coaching with honours. This is her first opportunity to present her art at an exhibition.

Artist’s statement:

I hail from an extended family of artists in one form or another. I have always found ways to express my creativity in my career as medical practitioner and scientist, but DNA will prevail. It is this spiral shape of DNA, as well as other spirals; from galaxies to the umbilical cord; to mathematical equations such as the “Fibonacci sequence of numbers” represented in so many organic forms, that compels me to now evolve into a textile artist and photographer. I invite the viewer to stand with me in awe of nature in its immeasurable vastness.
