Unearthed

Perception shapes the understanding of space. Psychological instability emerges when familiar spaces begin to transform beyond human control. Unearthed is the exploration of inevitable reclamation of human-made environments by the natural world.
The work depicts a decaying concrete wall with several tiered glass window bricks looking out to a distorted landscape of emerging and overlapping vegetation, some leaves even manage to protrude through the various areas surrounding the decaying structure. Several swirls and highlights are visible on the glass as they symbolise a disorienting nature caused by the actions of people and the impact thereof onto nature. The use of stone texture and block windows represent several substation buildings that I have encountered within South Africa depicted as rough and structured. Several glass cracks are visible on the glass blocks. The industrial broken pillar with protruding and winding copper rods symbolizes the fragile nature and impermanence of man-made creations although it is perceived as structurally stable it never truly is as nature can reclaim control, slowly taking back what it has previously lost. The title of the work reflects the wild landscape which is forcefully exposed while simultaneously choking out human industrial hubris.
