Ubizo (The Calling)

In a symbolic sense, the white ropes depicted in the show link me to my family tree and provide a lifeline. Every rope represents the continuous bloodline that links me to the ones who came before me on this journey. My fortitude, knowledge, and direction come from these relationships. The ropes symbolise the eternal connection between generations, serving as a constant reminder that I am not travelling alone but rather, with the help of the souls of my ancestors. In addition to being spiritual, this link is also personal and emotional, and it gives one a feeling of continuity and belonging.

The series' heightened spirituality is heightened by the inclusion of imphepho, a mystical herb. Traditionally, imphepho has served as a conduit between the material and spiritual worlds, allowing practitioners to call upon their ancestors for wisdom and direction. Seeing it in the photos suggests a hallowed ground where the barrier between the physical and spiritual realms is almost nonexistent, creating an ideal setting for intense spiritual experiences. As the aromatic smoke of imphepho fills the air, it evokes feelings of awe and contemplation, drawing the spectator into the journey's holiness.

Ancestry, spirituality, and the bravery to follow one's real calling are all themes that "Ubungoma" explores through these three images, which together tell the story of my own change.
