Hester de Vos Bio
Hester de Vos grew up around art, her mother being a renowned water colourist. After obtaining a BA (Commn. Sci.) from UFS, a B.Hons (Journalism and Pol.Sci.) from UJ, and 25 years as a journalist, she succumbed to her heart and started painting full-time.
Hester worked in oils and acrylics as a landscape artist, and is currently expanding her repertoire exploring composite art. She’s had two solo exhibitions in Cape Town, and participated in several group exhibitions, notably at art.b, a sought-after gallery in the Western Cape. She has works in private collections in South Africa, Europe, Canada and the USA.
Artist Statement
My art comes from the soul as an expression of my being, yet remains rooted in the experience of everyday life, combining photography and impasto mark-making to explore themes of time, memory and experience. Once the spreading and wicking action of ink is initiated, or the photo is glued to the canvas there is no turning back when working with ink on paper; photomontage, collage and impasto. Paint is applied thickly, yet cannot always be controlled, reminding me of the carefree moments of childhood; playing in the mud. I invite you to view my art through your own imagination and experience.
