Concept Statement – A Dialogue of Senses

The exhibition A Dialogue of Senses inspired a deeper exploration of what it means to celebrate womanhood. Jewellery becomes more than adornment; it becomes an artistic expression of identity, memory and belonging. Through the act of adorning ourselves, we acknowledge beauty as something both seen and deeply felt.

Like a relic from an ancient world, Koi-San 1 evoked a profound emotional response and a deep spiritual connection. It speaks of a sacred ritual trance dance—structured, purposeful and harmonious—celebrating the innate wisdom of the feminine. It honours the matriarchal presence found in nature, communal living, humanity, animals, the elements, our ancestors and the spiritual realm. It embodies nurturing, respect, beauty, and a deep appreciation for both life and death. Through movement, the ritual becomes a path of healing and transformation, where harmony restores balance.

I choice to rework this as a textile / crafted piece and not my usual media. When we gather together with friends and family to celebrate a special occasion or meet together as a community it’s usually done in a circle with a table in the middle. When we dance we dance in a circle. The circle represents togetherness, movement and protection. The grass sticks represents nature, nourishment, the grounding we find when we gather together (nesting) and the broom that is made to sweep all the dirt away. The wooden centre disc is an enlarged version of the jewellery piece highlighting the shape of the diamond / square in the weaving that is intertwined with blesbuck hide representing our connection to animals. A dance of transformation to create balance and harmony.

This dialogue reconnects us with an intrinsic rhythm that has always existed within us—before conquest, before borders and before erasure. It reminds us that life flourishes through balance. Woman and man are not opposites but complementary forces, each essential to creation, harmony and the continuation of life. In celebrating Women's Month, this work honours the enduring wisdom, resilience and sacred creative power of the feminine.
