(Monoprint inspired by The Man Who Sold the World)

This monoprint is a visual response to the haunting ambiguity within the song "The Man Who Sold the World". I was drawn to its shifting sense of identity—two figures meeting, yet never fully connecting, as if one is confronting a version of himself that has become distant or unrecognisable.

In the image, the figures face one another across a narrow, uncertain space. The setting is stripped down, almost fractured, allowing the emotional tension to take precedence over narrative clarity. The man in the hat appears grounded, perhaps rooted in experience or memory, while the second figure feels more transient— caught between presence and absence. Their interaction suggests recognition, but also estrangement.

The monoprint process itself mirrors this theme. It is immediate, unpredictable, and cannot be exactly repeated—much like the fleeting moment of self-awareness or confrontation the work attempts to capture. The stark contrast of light and dark reinforces the duality within the piece: self and other, past and present, truth and illusion.

Ultimately, this work explores the quiet dissonance of encountering oneself—how identity can fragment, shift, and, at times, feel like something we have traded away.
