Symmetry Of The Soul

Artist Statement

This body of work is a visual translation of 'beautiful chaos', the storm and the fire through which South African identity has been forged. Using a palette of bold craft paints that captures the colours of my nation and beyond, I explore the 'invisible pain' and resilience passed down through generations.

The symmetry and repetition in these abstract forms unintentionally invoke ancient mask-like structures and wall carvings, which for my generation are mirrored in our music. To my ears, our music is a colourful medicine that guides, heals, and allows us to move through hardship in rhythm. These flame-like, fluid forms celebrate the pride of shifting from trauma to triumph, showing that the roughness of our historical road is precisely what makes our collective human culture so vibrant, purposeful, and adventurous.
