Hear Me!

In hear me! (2024), I delve into the intricate and frequently repressed emotion of feminine rage. Coming from a typical South African background where patriarchal and authoritarian norms dictated societal norms, I have grappled with the pervasive sense that my voice goes unheard. Growing up, it often felt as though my opinions as a girl were inconsequential compared to boys'. This experience led me to feel that speaking up was futile, as my words were frequently dismissed as insignificant or nonsensical. It was as if I might as well have been voiceless.

This sculpture embodies my personal journey of reclaiming my voice and asserting my presence in a society where women's voices are often marginalized or disregarded. hear me! invites viewers to confront and contemplate the complexities of feminine rageā€”an emotion that is nuanced, suppressed, and overshadowed by societal expectations. It stands as a visual testament to the resilience and courage required to speak out against injustice and challenge entrenched norms.

Through this artwork, I aim to initiate reflexion, encouraging dialogue about gender, power dynamics, and the critical importance of amplifying diverse voices, particularly those of women who have historically been silenced or sidelined.
