Wisani Manyisi’s Artist Statement
My artistic practice is driven by a profound curiosity about the human experience and a desire to explore the evolving landscapes of modern society. Grounded in personal reflection and introspection, my work delves into the private thoughts, memories, and emotional landscapes that often remain concealed from public view. Through my art, I seek to navigate the complex tensions between tradition and progress, individual identity and societal shifts. Amidst the uncertainty and rapid change that characterizes our times, I create imagined spaces that invite the viewer to pause, reflect, and engage with the profoundly relatable themes of the human condition. The central figure in my work serves as a symbolic representation of the individual's inner journey -the search for meaning, comfort, and respite in a world that can often feel unsettling and unstable. The scattered papers and personal effects scattered throughout the scene represent the private stories, feelings, and experiences that we entrust to the page, finding an outlet for the complexities that shape our lives.
The surrealistic landscapes I depict function as liminal spaces, inviting the viewer to embark on a surrealistic journey of contemplation and self-reflection. These imaginative settings provide a counterpoint to the challenges of the present, evoking a sense of nostalgia and longing for the security of the past, while also containing the potential for growth, understanding, and new beginnings. Ultimately, my artistic practice is an exploration of the universal human experience – the tension between individual and collective, the desire for meaning and connection, and the perpetual negotiation between familiarity and the unknown. By engaging with these profound themes, I hope to cultivate empathy, introspection, and a deeper appreciation for the nuances that define our shared existence.
