Culprit

Artist Statement – Vincent Osemwegie

My work explores the complex relationship between man and nature, therefore capturing the nuanced essence of this connection. The interaction between humanity and the natural world is both intricate and destructive. In view we have a flower-adorned figure, set against a floral backdrop, symbolizing the coexistence of man and nature and its splintered form. Human interference has caused unimaginable damage, often disrupting nature’s stability in the pursuit to satiate man’s need.

This piece promotes a reviewer of mankind’s influence in the world. The work was created on Perspex, ideal for highlighting different layers of material, paint and  sketch. Collectively displayed on this substance they further enhance the complexities of this relationship. The figure was purposefully sketched on cardboard to highlight the fractures and disconnect between man and nature, thus showcasing the absence of Symbiosis.

Additionally, using  Ankara fabric known for its West African roots symbolizes the adoption of

nature’s elements used to enrich and shape this culture. The bold and intricate patterns are

known for depicting and embodying West African culture, its stories, and history.  Using these

fabrics reminded us of how dependent and reliant man is on nature’s gift.
