Crawl Spaces - Earings

Jewellery is arguably small when compared to other forms of art, and experiencing jewellery is mostly limited to seeing and touching. In contrast, architectural art installations such as pavilions are large enough for people to enter and experience in an immersive way.

Crawl spaces explore the limitations of conventional sensory ways of experiencing jewellery objects by inviting the wearer to imagine themselves within the jewellery, shifting the experience from purely visual and tactile to spatial and immersive.                                             The collection consists of jewellery pieces, including a ring, a cuff bangle, and earrings. Each jewellery piece has a solid, rigid structure beneath, with a swatch of commercially produced Dutch lace draped over it and attached. The dark colour and stiffness of the structure underneath is set in contrast with the white, fluidly draped lace on top.

The lace layer is perforated with openings that allow light to pass through, activating the interior space between the lace and the rigid substructure and suggesting an environment that extends into the object itself. In this way, the work draws on architectural principles to expand the experiential potential of jewellery, encouraging a more embodied and imaginative engagement with the work.
