Bowie 1

  • Bowie 1
  • Erna Bodenstein-Ferreira
  • Pen and ink
  • 50 x 35 centimeters

The two works created for the exhibition are both likenesses of David Bowie. The ink on paper portrait, depicts a young Bowie with round black ‘eyes,’ and alludes his final character, “Button eyes” that he would adopt and portray in his final music videos; “[Blackstar]” and “[Lazarus]” (2015-2016). The character, “Button eyes,” is assumed to symbolize, amongst other interpretations; mortality, a transition to the afterlife, and acting as a final, artistic confrontation with death.

The second ink on paper drawing depicts an older Bowie as himself in ordinary life.
