Working with drawing, painting and video, my practice is characterized by deep personal exploration connected to childhood, cultural identity, memory, mythology. Core to my practice is drawing and sketching. Ideas from my sketchbook inform both my paintings and video art pieces. As someone born in South Africa but whose identity is closely tied to Indentured labour. I’ve often felt displaced, not African enough for Africa and not Indian enough for India. My work allows me to bridge this divide by drawing inspiration from both Indian and South African culture. Influenced by Surrealism, Early Renaissance paintings, traditional and modern Indian art, and comic books. My work navigates between European and Asian art history by weaving together narratives inspired by allegory, Hindu mythology and folktales which express universal and personal experiences. My art is primarily about escaping the realities of the mundane world and experiencing something dreamlike, born from the imagination.
