ARTIST BIO: Sanet du Plessis

Sanet du Plessis is a Pretoria-based artist. She studied art and design, working as a graphic and exhibition designer in a corporate environment throughout her career, but took up jewellery manufacturing as a hobby to answer the pull towards a three-dimensional art form. Since then, contemporary art jewellery has remained a serious expression for her. She has exhibited at the Tina Skukan Gallery, Pretoria Art Association, Trent Gallery in Pretoria, and other galleries. Sterling silver is her metal of choice, combined with found objects, clay, resin, bone, wood, steel, perspex, plastic, medium-density fibreboard and glass. She pushes the boundaries of what is perceived as "precious" by utilizing materials that are low in intrinsic value but crafted in detail in combination with precious metal. In her own words: “In 200 years, someone will find one of my pieces on a dusty road, stop to pick it up, and think: Is this precious? And, perhaps, as an afterthought, string a thread through it and wear it as a talisman.”

She currently works as an art jeweller and designer, and also publishes books and paints.

Artist statement:

My six pendants on this exhibition reflects the textures and layers of African wildlife and nature. It blends my own vocabulary of lines, shapes, textures and colours with the provocative diversity of the African landcape.
