Nellien Brewer – Artist Statement

‘All flesh is grass’ - a phrase from the Bible and the title of both a scientific book and science fiction novel from the 1960’s - accurately emphasizes the temporary and fragile nature of human life.

Modern life, despite all the technological advances designed to improve societal and personal well-being has, conversely, led to increased mental instability and anxiety. The modern human being has become devalued as a person, disconnected from family and real friends. A quick Google search reveals that:

Modern anxiety is defined by continuous, low-grade stress fueled by digital connectivity, economic instability, and information overload. Unlike traditional survival threats, modern triggers are chronic, keeping the nervous system in a low-level "fight-or-flight" mode that impacts daily focus and sleep.

And yet, as roots develop and push through and past obstacles with an uncanny ability to grow and thrive in the most unlikely places, each one of us is still uniquely able to bloom where we have been planted.
