Johannesburg-based artist Angelique Bougaard explores hybrid identities in post-apartheid South Africa through language, childhood games, and artisanal papermaking. Her work deconstructs the term “Coloured” by reimagining it as "Kullid," a term she uses to embrace her experience of mixed heritage, freed from apartheid-era classifications.
Bougaard incorporates Afrikaaps dialect and Gamtaal slang, adding depth to her narrative. Her work titles, such as Madam Fifi, Poenakies, and Geitjie Tollie, draw from the playful and descriptive nicknaming tradition of the Kullid community, celebrating its unique cultural expression.
