Lerato Lodi

Biography

Lodi describes herself as a mother, an ‘artrepreneur’ (art entrepreneur), contemporary Fine Artist, arts writer, and cultural practitioner.

She is the recipient of the TUT Prestigious Dean’s List Scholarship (2018), Design Indaba Emerging Creative (2021) & Wanted Online ‘Wanted21: Young and vital artists’ (2021). Also, Lodi has contributed to the following publication: SWAG (Something We African’s Got)

Lerato’s BLACK.ARCHIVE STUDIO is a community-focused initiative that promotes collaboration and engagement within the creative arts, established in 2023.

Artist statement

Lerato Lodi was born in north-west of Pretoria, South Africa, in the township of Ga-Rankuwa. Lodi is currently based in Atteridgeville and works from her studio.

Lodi's artistic practice focuses on themes related to her spirituality. She interrogates ideas and ideals of African spirituality and Christianity as they manifest in her own life and the lives of those, she encounters using paint on canvas and non-traditional art making materials such as beads and sacred cloth.

Lodi explores the various ways in which people worship and pray through experiencing shrines, temples, and the materials brought into those sites as offerings.
