Being and Becoming:

An Exploration of Identity

Artist Mashir Kresenshun recently showcased his first solo exhibition, Being and Becoming, an evocative body of work that peels back the layers of self-identity. The exhibition explores the past, present, and future of self-discovery—questioning how much of one’s former self is left behind, while embracing the excitement of stepping into purpose.

Mashir evoking an Arabic sense of path, destiny, and a return to God—offers more than art; he presents a journey toward purpose.

This collaboration between Viewing Room Art Gallery and the artist unfolded with a sense of calm intentionality. The collection centres on identity, expressed through charcoal and acrylic paint—mediums that symbolize humanity, love, power, and transformation.

A recurring subject throughout the works is a faceless figure dressed in a suit. While the artist is drawn to corporate attire; the suit also represents a version of self that embodies power and aspiration. The absence of a face is deliberate: it removes individuality, allowing viewers to project their own interpretations and ask themselves—who is this man? Kresenshun’s use of bold contrasts—red, black, white, and green—creates a striking visual language. These colours evoke both emotional intensity and personal history, bringing forward memories of his upbringing in KwaZulu-Natal. Interior settings within the works further ground these memories, merging past and present into a shared space of reflection.

As a viewer and writer, the exhibition recalls the introspective message of Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson—a call to confront oneself honestly.

Other viewers found their own meanings: one interpreted the red clouds as curtains reminiscent of a grandmother’s home, while another reflected on the powerful stance of the figures, prompting a personal question—are you becoming what you set out to be?

Ultimately, Being and Becoming is a collection rooted in peace, introspection, and love. The artist’s journey is deeply supported by family, who have witnessed his growth into an independent creative. In his exhibition speech, Kresenshun paid tribute to his mother, describing her as his anchor and a true artist in her own right—an influence that inspired the exhibition’s title.

In his own words, Kresenshun leaves us with a message:

Be kind, respectful, and learn from your past because you are becoming. Whatever you want to become, do it—because life is short.”
