ARTIST BIO
Zainab Choonara (b. 1997) is an artist living and working in Pretoria, South Africa.
She is a Fine Arts graduate from the University of Pretoria, wherein she received her Bachelor's degree in 2024. Her work invites the viewer to connect with the spiritual resonance of prayers performed by the body. She uses printmaking, woodcarving, and other mixed mediums to propose a conversation between tacit processes and spiritual focus. Choonara’s work considers themes of presence, absence, trace and remembrance. Through processes that privilege repetition, touch and subtle acts of mark-making, she creates contemplative works reflect on unseen dimensions of belief and the ways in which spiritual experience becomes embedded within everyday objects and spaces.
