ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in the South African Great Karoo in 1969, Alex Hamilton has been an independent artist for over 30 years. Influenced by street art stencil graffiti and classic Warhol Pop art, his investigative, adventurous works reflects the current and historic obsession with celebrity culture. One of his most notable exhibitions is “Cast and Crew”, an editioned collection of over 3000 hand-cut pop culture handcut stencil portraits, launched in 2009 and still popular today.
An inventive gallerist, he has often hosting exhibitions in unexpected spaces across five of the seven continents including Stuttgart, Mallorca, Amsterdam and Sydney.
In 2003, he was the first South African artist selected to attend the Cill Rialaig Artist Retreat in County Kerry, Ireland and, in 2013, he was a finalist in The Stencil Art Prize, an international stencil art competition.
Hamilton is also renowned as an award-winning curator. His many curatorial accomplishments include a Fiesta Award in 2017 as Visual Art Curator for the Woordfees Literary Arts Festival, which he curated for three years. He has also curated a number of exhibitions for The Gallery at Glen Carlou, where his solo “redospective” exhibition was held in 2024/25.
Hamilton, who resides in Napier, released his autobiography entitled, ARTING and the subsequent shenanigans of a serial collector in 2024.
